DIABETIC EDUCATION

WHAT IS DIABETES?

Diabetes is a chronic (long-term) illness where there is too much glucose (type of sugar) in your blood.  Fasting blood glucose levels (BGL) should be between 4 and 6 millimoles/litre.
In type 2 diabetes, the body makes insulin (a hormone that helps balance blood sugar levels) but can't use it properly (insulin resistance).  Then as time passes, the body can't produce any insulin (insulin deficiency).
Diabetes is a serious illness, and whilst there is currently no known cure, with the help of lifestyle changes and the possible use of medication, you can effectively manage it.
Symptoms of Diabetes
  Tiredness
The need to pass urine more
    frequently
  Leg cramps
  Excessive thirst
  Blurred or impaired vision
  Dizziness or headaches
  Gradual weight gain
If you feel any of these symptoms, it is important to see your GP for a diabetes assessment.                                                                                                            Top of Page
